further ramblings
A lot has happened in the past few days, particularly the opening ceremony was fantastic! It was definately a memory i’ll never forget. Each countries flag was carried onto the stage and each one got a cheer. The Tunisian scouts only have 50 in their contingent so they asked the Irish to help them. We were happy to help
The irish contingent is getting at lot of praise for our enthuaism at the jamboree, Quest (the irish run programme module) is supposed to be fantastic and the irish house is packed nearly every night. The Irish necker is fast become the most valuble on site
The site is fantastic- a truely international city. There’s everything here from a laundrette to a dentists. The best part is getting to interact with loads of different nationalities. Today i brought a group of brazillians for a full irish breakfast and had lunch with the uk contingent

Hello from Sweden
Hi there,
Its now day 4 of the jamboree (cant believe how fast its going),Im on the waste management team which is actually a very easy job (mainly driving around in a truck swapping full bins for empty bins). Im in a patrol with two scouters from the uk, one from germany, one from the US and one from India. We have 3 supervisors from Sweden. We have 2 shifts (swap every second day) – 7am- 2pm and 2pm to 9pm. This includes 45 mins for lunch and 15 mins for fikka (Swedish for coffee break- very important to the Swedes). Food is actually ok if a little odd at times- no desert but we get dried bread (like riveta) at every meal. In the main village there are loads of food houses- irish house, holland house, swiss chalet, leichtinstein cafe, english tea house, austrian wafflehouse) but i havent need to eat there yet. the irish house was the busiest last night because of the live music- definately showing off the irish craic agus ceol to the world
The general atmosphere is hard to describe- everyone is so friendly. You could end up sitting having lunch someone from any country in the world and talk about their country or exchange badges or neckers. i have a nice little collection so far. My favourite is the swiss neckerchief which is one of the most popular to collect (the other one is the irish necker). The irish contigent stand out in their green hoodies and tshirts so its easy to find them in the dining hall
Tomorrow morning i am going to a “new skills” workshop with my patrol. It is one of four activity areas for staff to earn the IST Experience badge. Well thats all for now- talk to you in a few days!

Contingent Camp
Last weekend the Irish Contingent gathered in the farm of Brian Gray in Prosperous, Kildare for our second and final contigent camp before the jamboree. A lot of work has been done since we camped in Portlick in September. The Beaver Patrol welcomed Michelle and Darran into our ranks and said goodbye to Becks (SPLITTER).
We all arrived Friday where we checked in, put up our tents and heading to the Trom Troop meeting where Paudy told us what we’d be doing for the weekend. After the meeting we had a meeting at the Irish House (where most of the Patrol were working for the weekend). An Crann (The Irish House) will be one of many International food houses at the jamboree serving traditional Irish food as well as showcasing the various aspects of Irish Culture such as music, dance, sport, folklore and crafts.
We were up early the next morning as Bogger, Baz and Kevin were on the breakfast shift making French Toast for all the IST. After breakfast we had a “Sweden Briefing” from Paudy where we were told what to expect in Sweden before heading to the Apparell tent to get all our contigent clothing (neckerchiefs, a hoodie, a t-shirt, a polo-shirt, a buff and the contingent/troop badges). We spent the afternoon helping out the various things going on such as helping Kiernan display his badges and moving stuff in and out of the Containers. After dinner we had the Trom Troop investiture. Paudy invested each Patrol Leader (in our case Baz) and Baz invested the rest of the Patrol so we could wear our contingent neckerchiefs. After this we all headed down to the main stage for the Scout’s Own and then some entertainment by some very talented members of the Contingent. The next morning we took down our tents, helped pack more stuff into the containers and had the closing cermony before heading home. Next Stop Sweden!
